My game was doing the same when I bought it. I lowered the arena quality to low. The player quality to medium, and the crowd quality to low also. It runs smoothly. But it would still crash. Try turning off programs not being used by pressing ctrl+alt+del.
Another thing you can do (in windows 7 for me) is go to control panel> system and security > system on the left should be and advance settings option click it. The click settings on the performance tab, and select the option to adjust for best performance and apply. Windows will look like xp but it will play the game better
